The Geometry of Resonant Signatures in Debris Disks with Planets
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using simple geometrical arguments, we paint an overview of the variety of resonant structures a single planet with moderate eccentricity (e . 0.6) can create in a dynamically cold, optically thin dust disk. This overview may serve as a key for interpreting images of perturbed debris disks and inferring the dynamical properties of the planets responsible for the perturbations. We compare the resonant geometries found in the solar system dust cloud with observations of dust clouds around Vega and other stars and we discuss a new model for the asymmetries in the ǫ Eridani cloud. Subject headings: celestial mechanics — circumstellar matter — interplanetary medium — planetary systems — stars: individual (α Lyrae, ǫ Eridani, τ Ceti)

Collisional Grooming of Debris Disks
Debris disk images show clumps, rings, warps, and other structures, many of which have been interpreted as perturbations from hidden planets. But so far, no models of these structures have properly accounted for collisions between dust grains. We have developed new steady-state 3D models of debris disks that self-consistently incorporate grain-grain collisions. We summarize our algorithm and us...
متن کاملOn the Relationship Between Debris Disks and Planets
Dust in debris disks is generated by collisions among planetesimals. The existence of these planetesimals is a consequence of the planet formation process, but the relationship between debris disks and planets has not been clearly established. Here we analyze Spitzer/MIPS 24 and 70μm data for 150 planet-bearing stars, and compare the incidence of debris disks around these stars with a sample of...

متن کاملA New Algorithm for Self-Consistent 3-D Modeling of Collisions in Dusty Debris Disks
We present a new “collisional grooming” algorithm that enables us to model images of debris disks where the collision time is less than the Poynting Robertson time for the dominant grain size. Our algorithm uses the output of a collisionless disk simulation to iteratively solve the mass flux equation for the density distribution of a collisional disk containing planets in 3 dimensions. The algo...
متن کاملDusty Debris Disks as Signposts of Planets: Implications for Spitzer Space Telescope
Submillimeter and near-infrared images of cool dusty debris disks and rings suggest the existence of unseen planets. At dusty but nonimaged stars, semimajor axes of associated planets can be estimated from the dust temperature. For some young stars these semimajor axes are greater than 100 as seen from Earth. Such stars are excellent targets for sensitive near-infrared imaging searches for warm...
